Region Montérégie

A Successful Combination of Nature, Culture and History

The Montérégie region is ideally located between Montréal and the Canada/USA border. With its landscape carved by valleys, mountains, rivers, lakes and fertile plains, the Montérégie region offers spectacular views where orchards and vineyards let you sample their most delicious products. The Monteregian Mountains, which gave the region its name, are located on an imaginary line between Montréal and the Appalachian Mountains to the south. There is a total of six peaks in the region, which are Rougemont, mount Saint-Hilaire, which was the first biosphere reserve in Canada, as well as mounts Yamaska, Saint-Grégoire, Saint-Bruno and Rigaud. The river system of the region can be found in each sector of the Montérégie region, and several rivers served as stages for important historic battles through the centuries.

The Montérégie is also a region marked with the Canadian military history. In fact, at the beginning of the colony, Champlain built numerous forts in the region, for the defence of his fragile colony against American invasions. Later on, important battles took place here, mainly along the rivers, which were mainly used by fur traders back in those days. The region also has many heritage buildings because several lords settled here and built their houses that are still standing today and considered as ancestral houses.

The region’s history can be heard in the few museums and interpretation centres of the region, like the Maison nationale des Patriotes and the six National Historic Sites of Canada. Some important people were either born here or lived in the region, like Sir George-Étienne Cartier, Madeleine de Verchères, Honoré Mercier and Louis Cyr, to name but a few. In the Montérégie region, visitors can also appreciate the view of Canada’s oldest covered bridge: the Powerscourt bridge, built in 1861.

The Montérégie region abounds with fresh regional products like apples, squashes, wines, ciders, small fruit and chocolates. You can even pick your own fruit and vegetables at most of the farms of the region. If you are lucky, the owners might offer you to sample their delicious homemade products. There are also many maple groves and sugar shacks, allowing visitors to enjoy the taste of maple syrup and taffy on snow. Actually, Montérégie is the region of the province with the largest number of maple groves!

The Montérégie region proposes numerous interesting international-scale festivals and events, like the famous International Balloon festival of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Summer theatres abound in the region, and their programs are always amusing. Don’t miss the ideal family attraction: Parc Safari. It’s a great attraction for young and old. Finally, you can enjoy a ride along the panoramic and picturesque roads meandering through the region, or ride your bike along the pleasant cycling network of the region.
