the Monteregie is an original and captivating region.
The Monteregie is bordered to the North by the St. Lawrence River and the Island of Montreal; to the East by the tourist region of Eastern Townships and the Centre du Quebec; to the South by the United-States and to the West by Ontario and the tourist region of Outaouais. Five bridges and a tunnel link the Monteregie to the island of Montreal. Monteregie is subdivided into six tourist sub-regions due to the size of the territory.
The region is also the host to an important festival of hot-air balloons and to the Valleyfield international speed boat race.
Military History
An important page of history occured in this region, more precisely in La Vallée du Richelieu or «Vallée des forts». You will discover a series of fortifications built by the British and French settlers. Fort-Chambly is spectacular. It was built in 1665 to ensure the protection of Montreal against Iroquois attacks. The historical sites and their interpretation centers will explain the reasons for the defeat against the British, and why in 1837, the Patriots rebelled against the British government troops and much more!
